I have changed so much in my 12 years that I have lived but one thing that I changed was as simple as lines on a playground. But that one thing that I changed made someone very very happy. One of the reasons I love to help people is because it always makes me feel so good about what I did especially when people are thanking me so much. My memory is about an old grandmother who was so happy because we painted the lines on her old playground.
Through my church we do a love in action week. That is where everyone gets together and does good thing for the people and the community. My family and I had to go and paint parking lot line and play ground lines. It was so much fun venturing around with my family and painting the lines. We had painted one parking lot and three playgrounds when we came to a run down park. Me brother exclaimed,
“Why would any one want to play here?”
My brother was a young active boy who had seen much grander playgrounds than this on. I knew that we were here for a reason.
My mom grabbed the paint out of the car and we began to work. The day was slowly being drained away and the sun was blaring on us. I thought that I was going to have a heat stroke. My older brother tossed me the water bottle and I guzzled it down like a camel. I got back to work knowing that I only had a few more lines to paint when an older woman came out from behind the trees with a little girl that was most likely her grand daughter. She brought her over to the swing set and started swinging back and forth. It had been about an hour from when we first arrived and we finally finished our job.
We were packing up the car when the old lady came up to me and grabbed my hand very delicately as if I were sheer glass. She was so happy I could tell even though she didn’t say anything. I was right. The lady explained how when she was a little girl her grandma use to take her to this run down park. She also told us about how she would have picnics with her grandma under the blossoming cherry tree. I looked at her to see tears of joy welling in her eyes. She said,
“Thank you so much for coming here today and helping my play ground stay alive.”
I felt so happy that I had held and said,
“You are very welcome and I was happy to come today.”
The little old lady walked away not saying another word but having the biggest smile I had ever seen on her face. I was so happy that I had really helped someone. I hopped in the car after my mom called my name and the whole ride home I was telling them what the little old lady told me. It was the best love in action day I had ever had and probably the best I ever will.
